<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">20 years of SILENCE

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">As many of you know now, Saint Etienne, France, is the hometown of numerous gorgeously stunning musical projects.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Here is one that will probably blow your mind : SILENCE.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">SILENCE is actually Loïc Devigne, a cool guy who has been making music for about twenty years now. He is a protean artist, experimenting structures and styles, in music, but also in writing. Indeed, Loïc Devigne is also a writer and has already published some short stories, novels and also articles and reviews.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">But let's focus on the music.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In the late 90s, Loïc Devigne started making music with different projects whose names are mysterious or... quite disconcerting... CACA (the equivalent in English would be "poo") or H-TRANCE were his first attempts to make original music. From nihilism to a certain form of indie rock, these past projects are far from being anecdotal, and even if you're reluctant to listen to a song performed by a band called POO, we can assure you that you can dive into it fully, freely and without any fear or disgust! Have a listen HERE, the track "In a bin" is such a lo-fi jewel, throwing us back to the nineties DIY rock era. The album "Condominium" was released on Rewind Records.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">And there's SILENCE...

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The first official release dates back from 2012. The self-produced and self-released album "Osto-Disco" is a gem! A track like "Rose's Death" is a must-hear for indie folk lovers. Loïc's voice is warm and comforting, Tom Barman-like, and may give you the chills. "1000 years on your shoulders" is a really moving song (however it's not naive at all) apparently minimalist, but the arragements are really precise and subtle and make it perfect. "She" is a poppy rocking song that brings you back to your teen age years (for more-than-40-year-old folks like me, huh!) when you were trying to cover Sebadoh with your cheap detuned guitar and never reached the second verse. Not only SILENCE is reaching the end of the song, but he also makes it brilliantly and splendidly. Discover the full album HERE, it's worth a listen!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The second release is called "Noises" and was published in 2016 by Brume Productions. Presented as <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"the last (ever) record of Silence, in a sad mood" this oxymoronic album is a beautiful, moody and wistful masterpiece. Filled with sadness and regrets, "The Broken String" is the ultimate love song, brought to perfection by Loïc's delicate and desperate voice. This album reveals a lot about Loïc Devigne's influences, and "Noises" often sounds like a trip the US, across the southern states, oscillating between blues and country music, or reconciliating them ("Zhero"). "Good Riddance" nails it with this melodic guitar and the singer's most subtle voice, it's simple but gosh! it's beautifully breaking your heart into pieces, making it probably the best song in this excellent album. Listen to "Noises" HERE.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Well... the last ever record of SILENCE? No way!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Seems like Loïc is resurrecting the project! He's announcing a new album entitled "Take Care" for 2020. He published some demos on his bandcamp page, and released a first extract called "Little Karen" and... we just simply adore it! This 6-minute long indie rock song shows how talented Loïc Devigne is. The structure, the bass line, the voices, everything is catchy, efficient and addictive. This is definitely one of our favorite song of 2020. We'll keep you updated for the album release! Have a look at the video for "Little Karen" :
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

Fournier, l'engagement.

ouvrait son 2ème album For All The Bruises, Black

Avec No
Waves, No Bricks, No Walls, No Pass-Arounds, on accélère encore

conventionnel sans ce "I do love you when it hurts me so
douter...

Staring
at the Moon fait partie de ces chansons "raymondehowardesques"
typiques de son style si particulier. On pense à The Sculptress

Hands Shine With

Punktuality

S.W.E.A.T.
acronyme, S.W.E.A.T. ?

Ah!
L'Homme Debout, Le Flegmatic, ThOmas.W, Dimanche Cafard, Robert Zaza,
Pasca, Face de Loutre...

If you had to choose only one song from yours, what would it be?

"something is coming your way"

2. If you had to choose only one instrument, what would it be? La voix.
Voice.

3. Hey! Why don't you record the song you've just chosen with this instrument?!

Well, why not? It is quite an interesting idea. In fact, for a year, I have been thinking to make a song with vocals only. By looping some melodies made with the voice, for then singing over. But it is a thing that I still haven't made, also perhaps because for me, the voice is the most intimate and personal instrument which can exist. So for me, who is a kind of bashful person, to make a song with my own voice is pure intimacy, which is not obvious to know how to give, and do! I want to also say by that, a work on timidity is necessary to be able to do that. (personally, I needed years and a certain work on myself to be able to sing in front of people.. ) Anyway, finally this question can be the sign that is time for me to make this song..

4. What's your definition of DIY music?

My definition of the DIY music is first of all, this capacity to do everything by yourself. To be all at the same time. It's to be able to be at the same time drummer, singer, guitarist, bass player… in one man band or in a band, like these bands where the drummer suddenly plays the bass and the singer plays the drums during a show. But above that, it's also to be your own promoter, roadie, producer… because today there are so many artists (musical or not) it becomes hard to find a place as an artist, and it seems to me that the ' do it yourself' imposed by itself. It became like a necessity. Moreover, it seems that the DIY music is a relatively contemporary thing, in the direction we have an ability of communication which did not exist 20 years ago. With myspace, facebook, flickr, and others internet stuffs, today is much easier to be your own promoter, producer or whatever... simply thanks to the internet. Finally, the idea of 'do it yourself',in music or in arts in general , is to know how mix various mediums. To talking back about the music, is to know also how to be a drawer, poet, fine artist.. in relationship with our own music. (let's take for instance Kim Gordon who has drawn some covers for the sonic youth albums.) Finally, my definition of the DIY music is to know how to be independent and 'plural'.

5. If your music was a shape, what would it be?

Un rond.
Round.

I recently discovered a beautiful series of photographs made by Lewis Hine on child labor in the United States from 1900 until 1920. I picked this photograph for its intensity . This photo was taken in 1908, in Indiana. This teenager who already lived an absolute harsh reality, still has this spark, this incredible strength in his glance. he's dirty, his clothes are ripped off, but despite of that, he seems to have this determination, as if he was saying: " it does not matter, I will continue, and will fight whatever the price." I like this photograph for the resistance, the strength, the freedom also, this child is expressing.

7. What's your vision of live music?

For me, live music is a great catharsis. That makes it possible to be able to express and expel things that normally, we don't want or cannot express. Things that we repress. To make live music makes it possible to be in a certain state of trance and euphoria at the same time. When we play in front of a crowd, we can reach a point where the outside world disappears, then, we are totally absorbed by the music. Add to that the stress and the concentration effort which requests to make a concert. Moreover, it is the effort to go over ourselves and then, give something to people which for me, also create this euphoric feeling. To do live music, it can be similar as to be drunk in the end. It's to make our barriers fall, but in so much better way!

8. What are your current / future art projects?

For the moment, I am working on recording a session asked by " Dandelion Radio". "Dandelion radio" is an English internet radio who's discovered me through ' myhand.thanx'! ( thank you, my hand! ah! ah! ah! man! Otherwise, because I'm currently living in the United States, I will make a tour with Sean McCardle on the west coast of the United States in February (Sean McCardle is a one man band of California making country folk with whom I played in Washington D.C last September.) I will come back to Europe at the end of March 2011, and try to do some shows in France, and hopefully, thanks to Dandelion Radio, find also some shows in the United Kingdom. crossing fingers!

9. Are you a free artist?

Oui.
yes.

10. What's your vision of freedom?

My vision of freedom approaches initially to this popular expression: " The freedom of each ones stops where the freedom of the neighbor starts". The freedom for me, is not this idea :" I do what I want, when I want, with who I want, and I don't fucking care!" My vision of freedom is far from this idea of a powerful freedom, which is a little childish and terribly selfish. About music, art or life in general, and because of my personal experiences, I think freedom is very expensive. For me, freedom is to be able to get out the yokes. In music, it is to be able to compose your own music without anyone trying to control it, or someone saying to you how to do your music for eventual juicy contracts, for instance. It's to know how to be out of a certain global norm. It's also to learn how to be less opportunist, I guess. Freedom is also a fight, because, it is a fight and a real work to live as much as we want as an artist. That means to give up on such things, like material things for example. And obviously, like I said previously,to do the music you really like, it's often to choose to be poor (refers to the ' juicy contracts'... :o) To be free in music or in art in general, is to learn how to be patient too. Freedom is for me a difficult thing to tame, but I really can't live without. It's to know how to give up on certain things to accept some others. And maybe, at the end, freedom is just a way to fully enjoy life, it's maybe try to be ourselves ( here we go!!! Nietzsche on the place!!!) And maybe, freedom is you stop reading my bullshits! :o)myhand.thanx recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03437788488972206016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-352950594404124972.post-31295876089414220912011-02-28T01:18:00.000-08:002011-02-28T01:19:11.655-08:00myhand.thanx's YouTube ChannelListen to and Watch myhand artists HERE!!!myhand.thanx recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03437788488972206016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-352950594404124972.post-45051489683093687332010-11-07T02:32:00.000-08:002010-11-07T02:38:14.661-08:00INTERVIEW :Paula from Hangin Freud - 7th November 20101. From something I've released, probably Written For You After You Left Us from the Lonely Suburbs EP. The human voice as a component to the music - but not necessarily the element that foregrounds it the way most songs do - is something I'm pretty hooked on at the moment.

2. Most of what I've done has been on the piano. Definitely not in the mood to part with it anytime soon.

3. I don't really want to explain the connections, because ultimately I did not choose them based on any ideas that could be clearly described. For me, music is the art form that is most easily able to slip into the realm of 'pure' emotion. It's a feeling thing.

7. What's your vision of live music?

I never play live, though I have nothing against the format. It's more a logistical/equipment issue. Though if I did play live, it wouldn't be to recreate what's already been recorded. I'm interested in the jazz approach, where the emphasis is on spontaneous newness. A constant state of reaction to others and your own feelings and impulses at the time. Memorising and playing what you've already created seems pointless to me. If I ever played live, I would like to do it with some other musicians. Live performance is a social event. Others should partake.

8. What are your current / future art projects?

I don't know what you mean by "art projects", but I've got a new album coming out in December, tentatively titled travelsongs. A teaser EP, More Wind For Lonely Suburbs, is currently available for download. I'm also working on an album I hope to put out sometime early next year, which will be a singer/songwriter kind of thing. Part of me just wants to do that album now. Doing a more direct, lyrically and vocally driven record is a very exciting thought at the moment. I've been at work on a video installation which is more or less done. About half of the album to be released in December was originally written for the installation, which should be out next year sometime. There's also an album of much heavier stuff - also more song-based and vocally driven - which will be finished sometime, though I can't say when.

9. Are you a free artist?

In the economic sense, no. If I was then I would be able to make music all the time. Creatively, I would like to think of myself as free and certainly, I can record whatever I want. But I suppose I'm limited creatively by my own aesthetic prejudice, which excludes certain kinds of music. Also by the limitations of my own musical skill. In the latter sense I'm certainly less free than Mozart, Beethoven or Coltrane for example. Also, in South Africa there's very little cross-polination between white and black musicians and music scenes, though it has obviously improved since racial segregation came to an end in 1994. Nevertheless, on the music level it's been a tentative process of sharing and integration. The love for hip hop amongst white audiences, for instance, is nowhere near as big as it is in the States. And this is a direct result of a racial codification of music that arose through the racist Apartheid system we had in place for half of the 20th century. So that's a limitation of influence that I'm slowly trying to expose myself to and overcome. But in the broader sense, I don't think any artist is free, because we all lack the mentality to openly embrace the whole musical spectrum. We are all limited in that sense.

10. What's your vision of freedom?

That's obviously a tricky and dangerous question, and one I have avoided finding one answer to. While you need a long-term plan to try and push towards freedom, I also think that struggling your whole life to find it is ultimately not freedom of any kind. I think it is best achieved through trying to liberate your inner self as much as possible on a purely individual level. This is going to sound like some strange hippy bullshit, but being comfortable with your own nudity/sexuality is a big part of it. It takes you back to a state before we all felt all these useless and wasteful social pressures. Most of the time though, it's something I think needs to be taken on a day-by-day basis. There are a lot of temporary escapes. Sharing true intimacy and emotional openness with someone is one of them. Making music is certainly another, though I don't think it really frees you. It shouldn't really, because it's a way of conveying the lack of freedom, the injustice, etc. I'm not necessarily talking about politically motivated music. Sometimes you just try and convey an oppressed state of existence, even if you don't point any fingers. I'll be the first to admit that most of my music is very sad. That's not because I'm sad all the time. But for me it's a way of describing the negative sides of modern life, the suffering that's all around and sometimes inside me. The heaviness that descends when you face all the things that are immensely fucked up with my country and this planet at the moment. The music's a requiem for all that gets lost with that. I think freedom could begin by recognising you are not actually free and that others are even less so. But I don't think real freedom is possible, because the sources of oppression and imprisonment are immense and exist on all sides of the spectrum. That's a very negative way of looking at it, but a great deal of beauty can come about if we struggle for ourselves and, more importantly, for other people. Most societies, particularly capitalist ones, discourage any genuine charity.

I could go on in this vein. This is nothing new. You get the general idea.

myhand.thanx recordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03437788488972206016noreply@blogger.com0
